American Kenpo Karate

American Kenpo Karate was developed by Senior Grandmaster Ed Parker. It is one of the most comprehensive martial arts systems being taught today. Mr. Parker is recognized as the undisputed "Father" of American Karate.

American Kenpo utilizes concepts, theories, principles and innovations that are not found in other systems of martial arts. These innovations are what make Kenpo unique, practical, logical, realistic, and applicable. The system employs linear as well as circular movements, utilizing intermittent power when and where needed, mixed together with minor and major moves that flow with continuity. It is flexible in thought and action, allowing one to adapt to the different types of confrontations that one may encounter.

Like our other programs, students in our American Kenpo Karate class will learn basic stances, blocks, kicks and strikes, plus practical self-defense techniques and basic sparring skills as well as the Kenpo Sets and Forms.  However, there is more emphases on concepts, principles, and theories. In other words, students learn why they do what they do.

Is American Kenpo right for me?

People from all walks of life study Kenpo.  Some are simply looking to exercise while learning self-defense, some are seeking athletic competition, and others are working to improve self-confidence. But regardless of their personal goals, every student is learning one of the most practical and effective system of self-defense available.

Unlike other sports such as football and wrestling, Kenpo is a physical art that is appropriate and beneficial for individuals of all fitness levels and age groups.  Our programs are tailored to fit the individual's physical potential, so training moves at the student's own pace, whether fast or slow.

Kenpo Karate is an ideal family activity, and we strongly support family participation by offering a wide range of training programs as well as significant family discounts.

A Brief History of American Kenpo

American Kenpo traces its roots to the Chinese martial arts. Drawing from this ancient art, Mr. Parker, a dynamic martial artist and brilliant innovator, developed the system we now recognize as American Kenpo Karate.

Parker fervently worked to refine and develop the art that would become AMERICAN KENPO KARATE.   He analyzed each move, fascinated by the what, why and how of it all.  He categorized the pros and cons of each move, always increasing his knowledge of motion and how each motion fit into the total structure of the art.  He discarded illogical moves and sequences, seeking to refine his system to the point of total logic, consistency, and organization. He ruthlessly discarded ineffectual employment of motion which he felt could lead to unwanted problems for the practitioner.

Always willing to learn, Parker selectively incorporated his students' insights and innovations into his system.   Structuring his work like a scientific discipline, Parker established the unique concepts, theories, principles and vocabulary that comprise American Karate.

ED PARKER'S AMERICAN KARATE stands as the most comprehensive, practical and realistic martial arts system in the world.  His innovative and rigorously constructed "Parker System" is presently taught in American Kenpo Schools throughout the United States, South America, Canada, Europe, and Australia.
